3. I've Been Everywhere (by Geoff Mack)
We were on a big Johnny Cash kick after Walk the Line came out last year. We'd all
sing along to the soundtrack and actually Felix's favorite song was their cover of Bob
Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe. I tried really hard to make that work for this project, but it just
didn't fit. We liked the idea of a Johnny Cash song on the record, though, so we looked
through our collection and when we tried to narrow down our choices, I thought the
only one that we obviously CAN'T do is I've Been Everywhere, because, well, can you
imagine kids trying to sing that? And then I thought, Hey- can you imagine kids trying to
sing that!
So I enlisted some very bright kids and they laid their tracks down like pros. All three
Guittons are on it: Anna, Jack & Jose; Stephen Hagler, Michael McCormack and Chloe
Horseman (she sings the solo verse at the beginning). Kaylee Hanchey and Felix sang
along on the choruses. Kevin played the percussion and I played instruments. There was
a nice big sale at Musicians Friend so I got a banjo and mandolin for next to nothing just
to put on this song. They're both sitting in the piano studio hoping somebody'll play
them for real, so let me know if you want to pick them up for a while.
